Western Digital is making sure its hardware can keep pace in the media streamer arms race, matching recent additions by Microsoft and Roku by issuing updates of its own. New services added to the WD TV Live and WD TV Live Hub boxes are Vudu (with HDX 1080p support, unlike the Xbox 360), SnagFilms, XOS College Sports, SEC Digital, Comedy Time and Watch Mojo. To help users navigate through all the extra content, it also recently rolled out its own official iOS remote app, although like Roku, there have already been a few unofficial options available as well. The WD TV remote is a free app and offers direct access to any of the services on your WD TV box and even multiplayer gaming provided all devices are on the same network. An Android version is said to be in the works, for now owners can check out all the details in the press release after the break or hit iTunes to download the app.

We spent a lot of time going over Microsoft’s new dashboard for the Xbox 360 and what it could, but probably won’t, do to the market. Of course the folks in Redmond aren’t the only ones with something to show as we also cast an eye towards new iPad apps from Dijit and Cox, as well as the possibility we’ll see DirecTV’s HR34 Home Media Center DVR this week. Other topics include the cable companies getting out of wireless, Lovefilm switching from Flash to Silverlight, and Time Warner’s tablet app arriving on Android. As usual we close out with our picks of what to watch this week, so press play and see if you agree with our choices,

Microsoft’s new dashboard for the Xbox 360 is close at hand (read our full review for the details) but not all of the video partners that were announced for the new Kinect-centric experience will be launching alongside it. As of launch December 6th the list will look basically the same as it does now, with Epix joining options like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Sky Go. Later on in the month more new providers like Crackle, Dailymotion, Rogers On Demand, Vudu, and Verizon FiOS TV will filter in, while the UFC app is timed to launch December 20th. Finally, a few highly anticipated additions including MLB.tv, HBO Go and Comcast’s Xfinity On Demand are among those slated for arrival in “early 2012″. Check after the break for the complete list, we’ll let you know about more specific launch dates as they become available.

It’s amazing to realize that about two years ago Fanatec’s first Xbox 360 racing wheel, the Forza 3 Porsche 911 Turbo Wheel, hit the scene. Although it turned out to be a mixed bag, Fanatec pleasantly surprised us with its Porsche GT2 and Clubsport Pedals in January of this year — despite a roaring fan and shaky shifter mounts. Now, we’re saying hello to a new trio of racing sim-related goods from the company intended for Forza Motorsport 4 on Xbox 360: the 9.95 Forza Motorsport CSR Wheel, .95 shifter set, and 9.95 CSR Elite Pedals.

If you’ll recall, it was back in March that we checked some of this kit out, and now with Forza 4 here, we hooked this mashup of gear up with our Playseat Evolution for a massive amount of virtual spins. So, did this combination help speed past the checkerboard with a respectable feel? Shift past the break find out in our full review.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced that its Xbox 360 dashboard would be getting an upgrade “in the coming days.” Today, the company has clarified that statement, declaring that the revamped interface will launch on December 6th. As we’ve previously noted, the update promises to bring deeper Kinect integration (including sharper voice recognition capabilities), Facebook sharing mechanisms, and a cleaner interface. Redmond also says that the fall cleanup will introduce “a wealth of new content,” including live TV, music and movies, available for streaming. For now, the dashboard is still in beta, though it certainly won’t be long before the masses get their hands on it.

Amazing concept car designs often inspire gadget designers, but sometimes the inspiration flows the other way. Here are three awesome concept car designs from the past 5 years that were inspired by the latest gadgets – both in look and in their embodiment of the idea of the connected car.

Volkswagen Bulli

Inspired by Volkswagen’s iconic camper van, the Bulli concept car has an in-car entertainment and driver information system that is all controlled and operated by an integrated Apple iPad. The iPad is mounted in a custom dock attached to an extending tilt and swivel arm in the center of the car so that it can be operated by both driver and passenger. The tablet is responsible for all of the car’s “infotainment” functions, including audio, video, satellite navigation and even climate controls. The Bulli, which was first shown in 2011, also has a lithium-ion battery (which can be charged in under one hour), a 113-horsepower electric motor and a Fender-designed audio system.

Nissan Urge

First shown in 2006, the Urge was developed when Nissan North America Inc. and Microsoft collaborated to design a concept car which combined the latest in automobile design with the latest in gaming technology. The result is the world’s first fully integrated gaming system within a car.

Inspired by Microsoft’s hugely popular Xbox 360 video game console, the Nissan Urge has mobile phone integration, a flip-down LCD screen and, of course, a fully integrated Xbox 360. The console comes preloaded with Project Gotham Racing, and the racing game is actually controlled with the same steering wheel and pedals used to drive the car.

As you might expect, for safety reasons, the Xbox console can only be played when the car is stationary, but nevertheless, Microsoft says that the Nissan Urge delivers an unparalleled driving experience that cannot be replicated in any living room.

Apple-inspired iMove

Apple fans will be delighted should this Apple-inspired concept car ever become a reality. The hybrid iMove car is the brainchild of Italian automotive designer Liviu Tudoran, who designed it as a student project in 2010. It is, of course, inspired by Apple’s design aesthetic.

Among the innovative features, the iMove includes a touchscreen dashboard interface, solar glass to charge the car and a special photochromic “skin” which allows the driver to actually change the color of the car. The three-seater vehicle also features a removable roof and a door design that offers open access to the iMove’s interior.

Just as the rumors indicated, Microsoft is bringing video from a number of providers beyond the ones it initially announced to the Xbox 360 in its fall update, including big guns like Verizon and Comcast. While Verizon is promising “a selection” of its live TV channels on the Xbox 360, as we’d expected Comcast is only bringing its Xfinity TV video on-demand offerings (no AnyPlay powered live TV — yet) for subscribers when it launches “in the coming months”. Other notables on the list include Lovefilm and BBC TV streaming in the UK, HBO Go, and Syfy. As promised during E3, the services integrated with Xbox will offer support for search across whatever video is available, no matter where, as well as support for Kinect voice and gesture controls. The universal search is promising, as it pulls together various services in one UI as we discussed on the podcast yesterday, but the reality is content providers and geographical limits on what services you can pick from are still throwing up walls. Check after the break for press releases from Microsoft, Comcast, and Verizon detailing what you’ll be able to access and where, as well as a video introduction to the new services.
