Meizu’s Hong Kong store opens today, teases mainland Chinese fans with lower MX price

Posted by on Thursday, 15 December, 2011
As per Meizu’s usual elusive ways, this morning the company quietly opened its Hong Kong flagship store — the first-ever official Meizu shop outside mainland China. And like its mainland counterparts, we’re told that the new shop will be offering the MX Android handset on January 1st as well but with one significant difference: due to the lower local tax, the 16GB MX will be priced at just HK,099 (US8), which is much lower than the CN¥2,999 (US0) price in mainland. Great, looks like we’ll be expecting some lines in the heart of Mongkok in about two weeks’ time.

Toshiba Qosmio DX730 all-in-one brings Regza styles to your desktop

Posted by on Monday, 5 September, 2011

Here’s one that momentarily escaped our attention during all the IFA hullabaloo: the Qosmio DX730, which Toshiba says borrows both its design and ‘Resolution+’ picture processing technology from Regza TVs. The base model bears a rather lousy Pentium processor, but the range also includes Core i3 and i5 models, along with up to 6GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, a Blu-ray drive, TV tuner and Onkyo speakers. The multi-touch Full HD 23-inch panel also works in its favor. Pricing has yet to be announced, although Akihabara reports a similar bunch of models in Japan starting at a rather incredible ¥120,000 (00). We’ll have to rely on the Dell Vostro 360 to keep Toshiba’s expected margins firmly in check.

AMD intros Radeon-branded RAM, gives gamers that coordinated component look

Posted by on Tuesday, 9 August, 2011

Have an inexplicable lust for all things AMD? Better sit down for this one folks, as your favorite chip company is back, this time peddling Radeon-branded RAM in exchange for your hard earned dough. Tested to the “highest industry” standards, the DDR3 modules will be available in three SKUs: the entry-level “Entertainment” sticks (clocked at 1333MHz), followed by speedier “Ultra Pro” (1666MHz) and an “Enterprise” RAM of an unknown speed. Akiba PC Online! spotted 2GB modules of the lowest tier chilling in Japan for a cool ¥1570 (around stateside), as-well as a US product page (which we’ve kindly linked below). Small price to pay for memory to match your graphics card — brand loyalty’s a beautiful thing, right guys?

Canon’s second quarter profits dip 20 percent amid supply constraints, strong yen

Posted by on Monday, 25 July, 2011

Canon had some good news and some bad (but not unexpected) news in its second quarter earnings released today. On the upside, the company has raised its profit outlook for the rest of the year, and says that the recovery from the earthquake that forced it to halt camera production has been “quicker than expected.” That halt to production did take a considerable toll on the company, however, and contributed to a 20 percent drop in net profits to ¥53.86 billion, or 5.7 million, compared to a year ago — a figure that was compounded by a strong yen that further cut into its earnings overseas. That revised profit outlook comes in part from an updated shipment forecast for interchangeable lens cameras — it now expects to ship 7.3 million instead of seven million, although its forecast for compact cameras remains unchanged at 20 million. Could that also include a few mirrorless models? Perhaps, although all indications are than an actual release will have to wait until sometime next year.

Japan scores official Bluetooth PS3 keyboard for ¥5,000

Official PS3 Keyboard

Yesterday, Sony took the wraps off a PlayStation-branded 3D TV and gave us our first serious look at the Vita, but our friends across that big wet thing we call the Pacific scored an extra little hardware goody — an official PS3 keyboard. If you’ve ever seen a Bluetooth keyboard there isn’t much surprising here, though it does feature a PS button for powering the console on and off. Instead of a touchpad Sony went with a Thinkpad-style nub which will be loved by some, but loathed by others. And don’t worry, pairing this thin one-pounder with other devices should be quite simple. Folks in the Land of the Rising Sun can pick one up on June 30th for ¥5,000 (about ), but there’s no word on a stateside release. Treat yourself to the machine translated PR and another pic after the break.
